Years ago I came across a beautiful Scottish or Irish folksong (the origins are debatable) called The Mountain Streams where the Moorcocks Crow. It was recorded by Susan McKeown on her 1998 album Bushes and Briars. These past weeks we’ve had birds nesting in our garden and raising their young, and one line kept running through my head: “Where the linnet sings her sweet notes so pleasing”.

This line inspired me to set out the design that lays before you. I aimed for it to be as joyous as the linnet’s carefree song – with a beautiful vase of flowers at the centre, and little birds in negative in each of the four corners.

The pattern is very versatile, in that it can be transformed into a commemorative piece (for weddings, births or other celebrations), it could be a welcome sampler – but you could also decide to stitch a small portion of the sampler. Mirroring the bottom panel for instance would make for a really sweet pin cushion!

CHART DETAILS

This design measures 105 crosses wide and 264 crosses high. If you stitch it on 32 count, it will measure approximately 6 5/8” by 16 1/2” (16. 5 x 42 cm). When worked with 2 pulled strands, you can stitch approximately 2000 crosses with one skein of DMC

COLOUR 1: 4486 (2. 5 skeins)
COLOUR 2: 7256 crosses (3. 5 skeins)

The cover art for this design is a digital interpretation of one of the possible ways you could stitch this design. You can stitch it on light or dark cloth. It is best stitched with two colours that compliment each other, one slightly darker than the other. Whether stitching on light or dark material, I would recommend using the darker colour for colour 1, and the lighter floss for colour 2. I am not giving colour suggestions here, as I would really love to encourage your creativity in choosing your own personal colours.
