The early Quaker William Penn wrote his collection of epigrams Some Fruits of Solitude in Reflections and Maxims in 1682 – and despite being nearly 340 years old, it has some surprisingly accurate advice for us here in the 21st century. The quote I picked for this sampler reads “If thou thinkest twice before thou speakest once, thou wilt speak twice the better for it”. I wonder how lovely it would be, if only this quote could be on the top of social media platforms such as Twitter…
As that is unlikely to happen, I’ve chosen to chart the quote and present it to you in the form of a Quaker inspired design. It’s definitely a quote that I need to be reminded of! You can personalise your sampler by using the letters and numbers presented at the bottom of the sampler. Stitching the alphabet is optional, as I think the sampler would look wonderful without it as well.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This sampler is 145 crosses wide and high. Worked over two threads on 32 count linen it would measure approximately 9 1/8” by 9 1/8” (23 x 23cm).
This design has a total of 6622 crosses. On average, you can work approximately 1800 crosses with an 8 yard skein, when working with 2 pulled strands of floss over 2. This means that you need approximately 3.5 skeins of floss.
Although the original design is completely monochrome, you are free to stitch this pattern with any or all of the colours you wish. I have recently started using Leo & Roxy Yarn Co. floss for many of my designs, and I thoroughly enjoy stitching with this hand overdyed floss.
My favourite black is “Chalkboard”. You can purchase all of the Leo & Roxy floss exclusively through the Canadian shop www.evertote.com
The pattern has been split over 6 pages. After the 1st page you will notice a 3-cross wide greyed out border: this area is an overlap from the previous page, which will make it easier to find your way on the next page.
