Last year, whilst doing some early Christmas shopping, I walked past the street where we used to live a few years ago, and discovered that a wonderful shop had opened right on our old doorstep. Harper and Carr is made up of Greg Harper and Rebecca Carr. Both studied tailoring at the University of the Arts, London: London College of Fashion, and now have made York their home.
The rugged landscape of the Yorkshire Moors seems to be a fitting backdrop for their collection: their clothing is simple, natural, and very beautiful. They champion british made fabrics and sustainability, whilst their collection has a strong emphasis on durability. When visiting the shop, you will be able to catch either Greg or Rebecca sewing and stitching at their collections, as each piece is completely hand made. Their aprons are both practical and beautiful – I’ll probably need to get one to protect my clothes whilst doing my own dyeing!
Next to their own collection, Harper and Carr also sells pottery, books, magazines, art, and more. When visiting York, their shop on Fossgate is definitely a must.

Dear Jacob: I am so homesick right now I can scarcely bear it! Will googlestreetwalk myself down Fossgate in just a minute, but wanted to thank you for reminding me of one of the loveliest streets in the world. While we’ve only been to York a few times it has wrapped itself around our souls. So thank you for the shop notice and for the yearlong sampler. I am stitching on 32 to the inch Edinburgh linen in a mix of grey stranded cotton and five or six blues – the grey as a constant and the blues randomly selected. Sounds a bit odd but it gives a nice mottled, faded look without looking beyond the thread stash. Will send pictures when the camera/computer chap gets to it. Best regards, Charlotte in California
I’m glad you enjoyed the blogpost Charlotte – and I can’t wait to see your stitching – it sounds amazing! 🙂
