A wonderful wintry border sampler, taking inspiration from Icelandic embroidery and borders found in an early 17th century German book on embroidery.
The creative springboard for this particular pattern was a wonderful book on Icelandic embroidery by Elsa E Dudjónsson that I recently received. The letters found on this sampler are my take on the alphabets found on a lot of traditional Icelandic embroidery. As with many traditional patterns, I have chosen to ommit the letters “J” and “U” on this sampler: they can easily be substituted by using an “I” and “V” respectively.
The borders are adaptations of antique examples. As I wanted to make this one slightly wintery, I decided to add some rampant stags to the large border, together with some traditional acorn motifs. I like that the decorative borders could be either Scandinavian or Islamic, with their repeat patterns found in different cultures all over the globe.
This pattern measures 155 crosses wide by 228 crdosses in height – embroidered over two threads on 32 count linen it would measure approximately 9 ¾” by 14 ¼” (24.5 by 36cm). I would recommend approximately 9 skeins of my very own Modern Folk Embroidery Wool to finish this pattern.
