These four pincushions would be a great project to stitch alongside my Mystery SAL. I designed it to celebrate the many Japanese stitchers who have joined in on the SAL over the last few months, and who have shared their inspiring work and beautiful photos with me.
Each of the four pincushions features a Japanese Kanji representing a season. Kanji is one of the writing methods in Japanese consisting of thousands of different characters – the other two being Hiragana and Katakana. Each character is framed by a Quaker style medallion, with seasonal elements (blossoms, fruit and flowers, autumn leaves and acorns, and finally wintry stars and snow flakes). The designs, when stitched in blue, also resemble antique Dutch tiles (Delft ware).
This design was stitched with Weeks Dye Works “Navy” floss on 32 count “Mustard” linen by Zweigart.
The four patterns measure 53 by 53 crosses each – embroidered over two threads on 32 count linen it would measure approximately 3 3/8″ by 3 3/8″ (8.5 by 8.5cm).
