This pattern came about after a chat with Caroline from Evertote discussing possible new collaborations, using floss colours by Leo & Roxy Floss Co, and working on a linen exclusively dyed for this kit by them, called Blank Slate. Excited about working with some of these beautiful floss colours, I came up with this design inspired by the prints of the Italian baroque artist Isabella Catanea Parasole.
In the collection of the MET museum in New York are several books by Isabella Catanea Parasole, who created stunning engravings as guides for embroidery and lace-work. The books, released in the late 16th and early 17th century, were not only the starting point for the design that’s in your hands right now, but have inspired many artists throughout the centuries. It was pattern books like those by Isabella that influenced the way samplers were to develop in Europe.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This design measures 127 crosses wide and 104 crosses high. It is recommended to work with 1 pulled strand over 2 on 40and higher count linens. You can work with 1 or 2 pulled strands on 36 and 32 count linens – depending on your taste. For 28 count I would recommend 2 strands.
28ct: 9 1/8” x 7 1/2” (23 x 19cm)
32ct: 8” x 6 1/2” (20 x 16.5cm)
36ct: 7” x 5 7/8” (18 x 14.5cm)
40ct: 6 3/8” x 5 1/4” (16 x 13.5cm)
46ct: 5 1/2” x 4 1/2” (14 x 11.5cm)
It has been design with Leo & Roxy Floss Co colours in mind – but feel free to personalise these colours. On average, you can stitch about 1800 crosses with one hank of hand-dyed floss using 2 strands over 2 on 32 count linen. Below you will find the amount of crosses, and an estimate of the amount of skeins needed, based stitching with 2 strands over 2 on 32 count linen.
Falu Red (3459 crosses) – 3 skeins
Flamingo (2063 crosses) – 2 skeins
Antique Wedding Dress (1619 crosses) – 1 skein (but I recommend getting 2)
The pattern has been split over 2 pages. After the 1st page you will notice a 3-cross wide greyed out border: this area is an overlap from the previous page, which will make it easier to find your way on the next page. The design can be personalised with the alphabet and letters on the next page of this booklet.
