Earlier this year I spent some wonderful days in the city of Stockholm in Sweden, where I visited the Nordiska Museet (The Nordic Museum). This museum not only holds a wonderful collection of objects related to life in Scandinavia, but it also has a truly spectacular textiles collection.
Housed in huge metal drawers, it is a truly exciting experience to open each drawer and marvel at all the beautiful things that have been stitched up by so many hands over so many centuries.
In the area of Hälsingland a very interesting type of redwork embroidery is worked. One element seen on these embroideries are repeat borders using large triangular motifs. For my small pincushion design I took the idea of the triangle designs and gave it a personal twist.
As the design looks both like a star and a flower, I named it Stjärnblomma, which in the Swedish language would translate as Star Flower. Repeated as a border pattern, it could also work very well as the edge on a bed spread or perhaps a table cloth!
CHART DETAILS
This pincushion design measures 65 crosses high and wide. Stitched on 32 count linen (or 16 count aida) it would measure approximately 4” by 4” (10. 5 x 10. 5 cm). This design has a total of 2108 crosses. When stitched with two pulled strands of floss, you will probably need just over one skein of DMC.
