Two Birds in One Tree – PDF Pattern

height: 140 crosses
width: 119 crosses
total crosses: 7681
thread estimate: When stitched on 32 count linen (or 16 count Aida) this pattern requires approximately 4 to 5 skeins of Modern Folk Embroidery Wool, or, when stitched with 2 pulled strands of Retors du Nord 4 stranded cotton floss between 45 – 58 metres (3 skeins of floss).

This romantic pattern was inspired by some medieval columns found in an ancient Italien church, now on display at the V&A in London.

A recent visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum inspired me to design this cross-stitch sampler with two birds in a small tree. Inspiration came from the ornamentation on a 13th century column from southern Italy, originally carved in wood.

The two facing birds seem like rather primitively carved peacocks – originally a symbol of eternal life. This would make sense, as the pattern could be seen as a little tree of life.

This pattern measures 140 by 119 crosses. Stitched on 32 count linen, this would measure approximately 8 ¾” by 7 ½” (22x19cm).
