Description
Whereas some of my previous Quaker samplers have mixed original and traditional patterns, this one sprung completely from my own imagination. The style of the sampler is like those of old, and features a selection of medallions, and a full set of upper case & lower case alphabets and numbers.
As this is in a way a work of historical fiction, I chose to make up the character of Eleanor Stickney. The family name was taken from an unfinished Quaker sampler in the collection of the York Museums Trust. In the late 18th / early 19th century a family with the name Stickney owned a farm near York, whose daughter Sarah Stickney Ellis would become a writer.
The words Love, Peace, & Tenderness are borrowed from a quote by Isaac Penington. He was an early Quaker from the 17th century who wrote several books, and was imprisoned many times, like many of his fellow Friends at the time. The full quote by Penington is as follows:
“Our life is love, and peace, and tenderness; and bearing one with another, and forgiving one another, and not laying accusations one against another; but praying one for another, and helping one another up with a tender hand.”
This sampler measures 235 crosses in height, and 204 crosses in width. Stitched over two threads on 32 count linen, it would approximately measure 10 1/4” by 8 1/2” (26 by 21.5cm).
This pattern is available for download immediately after purchase.
