Ever since the start of this year’s Mystery SAL I’ve been very excited about this particular part of the design. I’m presenting it as a DIY design challenge for you, where you will pick your elements, and create your own August part!
If you feel a little uncomfortable creating your own design, or if you’re just not happy with what you made, you can always choose to stitch the design I’ve included at the end of the pattern booklet. It uses some of the elements in this pattern, and will fit the mystery SAL perfectly!
So, are you ready to start? All you need is part 8 of the 2019 Modern Folk Embroidery Mystery SAL, a printer, a pair of scissors, and some glue (I would recommend a glue stick or a similar glue that allows the paper to stick flat without rippling).
STEP ONE:
Print out all of the designs and the empty graph paper page (pages 4-8 of the PDF booklet).
STEP TWO:
You can now start cutting out all of the individual parts of the design. Make sure to cut fairly close to them. In the pictures below you can see how I’ve kept it very close to the outer edges.
STEP 3:
It’s now time to start playing! Start by selecting the larger designs, and place them on the empty grid first. Move things around, and see what works best for you. Once you have found some large elements you like, start filling the empty spaces in your design with small elements. Once you are happy with the design, make a final check by aligning the elements neatly to the graph.
STEP 4:
It’s now time to glue your design elements to the empty graph paper. Start with a large element, and make a mental note where it is in the graph, so you know exactly where to stick it back again. Repeat this until all the elements are glued to the paper.
STEP 5:
You are now ready to stitch your pattern!
